Cycle of organizing with OTOC leaders

OTOC and our Institute for Public Leadership (IPL) worked with our Iowa-based sister organization, AMOS IPL, to organize and conduct a three-day leadership training program in Des Moines on August 2-4. 

 

Thirteen people from Omaha and 30 from Iowa attended the training to help them better understand the conceptual framework and fundamental practices of community organizing during three days of engaging training sessions, meeting new people and sharing stories about their work for the common good in their own communities.

OTOC is an affiliate of the Industrial Areas Foundation.  Leaders who are part of OTOC member institutions are welcome to go to regional and national training programs like the training in Des Moines.

Upcoming Leadership Training Programs

Five Day Training program:

OTOC is affiliated with the Industrial Areas Foundation (IAF) and Interfaith Education Fund (IEF) which provide training opportunities to organizations and individuals who are interested in using the disciplines of community organizing to work for the common good of their community. Below are three training opportunities of especial merit.

When: Monday, Nov. 16th at 3:30 p.m. to Friday, Nov. 20th at 12:00 noon

Where: Loretto Spirituality Center Littleton, Colorado Cost is $700 for room and board for those staying at the Spirituality Center. Make reservations by October 30 through OTOC office.

What: This intensive training in organizing concepts and practices will be led by senior lead organizers with the Industrial Areas Foundation (IAF) and will involve leaders affiliated with OTOC’s sister organizations from across the United States.

Seminars for Leaders involved in Organizing:

Institute for Public Leadership (IPL), an affiliate of OTOC, is also affiliated with the Interfaith Education Fund which organizes seminars with leading academics, writers and public intellectuals who are concerned about the vitality of our democracy, the fairness of our economy and the vitality of our faith institutions. Most expenses for these seminars are paid for by Interfaith Education Fund or Institute for Public Leadership.   • Mathewes & Bretherton Seminar

When and Where : February 5 at 9:00 a.m. and to Saturday, February 6 at 8:00 p.m. in Dallas, Texas area hotel

What: Seminar with Charles Mathewes (Carolyn M. Barbour Professor of Religious Studies at the University of Virginia) where he teaches religious ethics and religious thought. He is the author of Evil and the Augustinian Tradition and A Theology of Public Life, The Republic of Grace, and Understanding Religious Ethics. Luke Bretherton (Professor of Theological Ethics and Senior Fellow, Kenan Institute for Ethics at the Duke Divinity School) He is the author of Hospitality as Holiness: Christian Witness Amid Moral Diversity. His recent work has focused on faith-based organizations.

  • Adelman Seminar

When and Where: April 11, 2016 (Times TBD) to April 12, 2016 (Times TBD) in Los Angeles, CA

What: Seminar with Jeremy Adelman (Henry Charles Lea Professor of History at Princeton University). We will be discussing his book Worldly Philosopher: The Odyssey of Albert O. Hirschman (Princeton University Press: Princeton, 2013).
