Timeline of Activities

 Committee Mission - Promote smart growth in the Omaha Metro area that is equitable to all elements of our community through research, education, and action 

·         July 24, 2001 - Committee’s first meeting at St. Pius with about 10 people present. Committee formed in response to concerns about urban sprawl and traffic issues from house meetings earlier that year. Michele Jarzynka and Marie Belognia were co-chairs. Meetings held monthly, usually at St. Pius. Launched first research action – review the Omaha Master Plan adopted in January 1997.

·         Aug. 1, 2001 – Committee members attended Omaha Planning Board meeting.

·         Sept. 6, 2001 – Committee attended Andres Duany lecture on New Urbanism at Joslyn Art Museum

·         Sept. 13, 2001 – Meeting with NuStyle Development

·         Oct. 30, 2001 – Meeting at St. Pius with MAT representatives about their Transit Alternatives Analysis Study

·         Dec. 2, 2001 – Presentation at Fall Convention. Marie elected OTOC Co-Chair, Clyde Anderson took her place as MAD co-chair.

·         Dec. 27, 2001 – Meeting with Omaha City Planning Dept. (Steve Jensen and Dave Carey)

·         Jan. 8, 2002 – Meeting with Steve Virgil of Nebraska Appleseed about development subsidies

·         Jan. 25, 2002 - Meeting with Omaha City Planning Dept. (Steve Jensen, Dave Carey, Lynn Meyer, and Karen Klein)

·         Jan. 31, 2002 – Meeting with Marty Shukert, urban planning consultant

·         Feb. 6, 2002 – Meeting with Todd Heistand of NuStyle Development

·         Feb. 8, 2002 – Unicameral hearing on LB 1136 (Dave  Rosser and Clyde Anderson testified)

·         Feb. 28, 2002 – Meeting with Harlan Noddle, commercial developer

·         March 28, 2002 – Meeting with Steve Jensen (Omaha City Planning Dept.) about zoning, platting, and SID processes

·         April 3, 2002 – Meeting with Chris Shewchuck (Bellevue City Planner) and Jennifer Dam (Papillion City Planner)

·         April 9, 2002 – Changed name to Metro Area Development Committee (from Urban Sprawl Com.)

·         April 12, 2002 – Attended First Regional Conference on Growth, Joslyn Castle Institute for Sustainable Communities

·         April 16, 2002 – Attended MAT public hearing about Alternative Analysis Study

·         April 28, 2002 – OTOC Delegates Congress, distributed fact sheet about May 23 workshop

·         May 1, 2002 – Attended Omaha Planning Board meeting

·         May 14, 2002 – Meeting with Christian Christenson of Bluestone Development

·         May 15, 2002 – Meeting with Omaha City Planning Dept. (Steve Jenson and Bob Peters)

·         May 23, 2002 – Committee put on World of Development workshop at FUMC, 37 attended

·         July 10, 2002 – Attended Omaha City and Douglas County Planning Board meetings

·         July-Aug., 2002 – Analyzed Proposed 2003 Omaha City Budget

·         Aug. 3, 2002 - Meeting with Bob Steffen (environmentalist) and Ralph Wilson (City of Waterloo)

·         Oct. 7, 2002 – Meeting with Acting Public Works Dir. Norm Jackman

·         Winter-Spring 2003 – Creighton students study Omaha City Planning Board actions

·         Dec. 7, 2002 – Tour de Sprawl (Sat. bus tour of Omaha showing examples of good and bad development), 48 riders

·         July 29, 2003 – Sponsored impact fee seminar at FUMC - “Using Impact Fees to Finance Schools and Other Public Construction Required by New Residential Development”

·        July-Aug., 2003 – Analyzed Proposed 2004 Omaha City Budget

·        Fall 2003 – Committee disbanded
