OTOC Current Issues

Public School Finance Research

This OTOC committee is studying the state of public education funding in the Omaha metropolitan area. Its aim is to "pull back the veil" on the complex funding formula for funding education that has become the subject of several law suits. For 10 years OTOC has been committed to building one strong community, each citizen supporting each other. We believe that education is a critical component for the continued growth and success of our community. The leadership of OTOC feels the One City One School District proposal should be explored thoroughly. More information

Our City Budget Priorities

Our tax dollars provide essential public investment to ensure the operation of our city. Our taxes fund the city operating budget that pays for essential city services like police, fire, libraries, etc. In addition, we pay taxes so the city can pay back on borrowed funds (bonds) in the capital improvements budget for projects like streets, sewers, buildings, etc. Whose interests are reflected in the city budget priorities? Whose projects are included in the capital improvement plan? Are the issues affecting our families, congregations, and neighborhoods represented in the city's funding discussions? For more information see Municipal Agenda Fact Sheet (pdf Sept 2005)

Healthcare Research

Currently 10.8% of Nebraskans have no health insurance. We all pay for the uninsureds' medical care through higher premiums. The average Nebraskan pays $918/yr more for family coverage just to help cover the uninsured. OTOC's Healthcare Committee is also studying the relationship between healthcare insurance and hospital pricing. For more information see Healthcare fact sheet (pdf Sept 2005)

Work Issues Call for Broad Research

Work Committee members will explore current efforts to re-shape the labor market by creating more good jobs, taking bad jobs and making them good jobs, and improving access to jobs.  The committee seeks to create a public space where work concerns and questions can be discussed, researched and acted upon.

Library Cuts Call for Action

Libraries are being built and renovated—but their doors are too often locked when families need resources.  The library committee is once again seeking collaborative partnerships to organize an action-oriented voice to make public libraries a stronger community priority.

Improvement Sought for Citizen Complaint Process

The OTOC Police/Community Relations Committee is researching and seeking improvement to the Citizen Complaint Process which is now subject to oversight of the Public Safety Auditor.  The committee continues to work for strategies to rebuild trust between Omaha citizens and our Police Department and to push for full public funding of the Auditor’s Office.
